This eerie but vibrant snap shows a flower mantis (Creobroter sp.) perched on top of the strange fruiting body of a Cordyceps fungus. In daylight, this insect is usually green, but wildlife photographer Irina Petrova Adamatzky used strategically placed coloured lights to accentuate its otherworldly appearance and that of the fungus. The shot won a bronze award in the 2025 World Nature Photography Awards

Mit zermatschter Banane ließen sich einige Erdbeerbaumfalter vom Kothaufen weglocken. Sieht nicht gar so auffällig aus. Netter Nebeneffekt war, dass die ansonsten eher unruhigen Biester ganz umgänglich wurden und auch mal sitzen blieben.

This beautiful lady is Solenopsis invicta. Measuring barely over 2 mm long, she is a member of an incredibly successful species.

Unfortunately, she is far outside her native range, and doing incredible damage to her local ecosystem.

It isn't her fault that she's a fire ant.
