The #pixel_dailies theme today was #wheelchair.

I knew that I wanted to work on a symbol this time, so I researched the history of the now ubiquitous #disability symbol (♿).

My entry today is a rendition of an unsuccessfully proposed disability symbol, originally created by the organisation "Open Doors for The Handicapped".

I’m planning to fly next week within the U.S. My last trip out of my local airport was horrible—TSA did an extremely invasive pat down of me in full view of other passengers and the agent yelled at me for not understanding her instructions and for collapsing. I am an ambulatory #Wheelchair user and I am #Autistic with an anxiety disorder. Does anyone have advice about TSA and how to help things go more smoothly? #Disability #Disabled #ActuallyAutistic @actuallyautistic

We've had an email about a custom #wheelchair fabrication project from someone in #Devon, UK.

> I'm looking for 2 things. 1, a person/group who can build me a cheap fullsize working model of the pdf design seating and simple framework for attaching it to wheels, and 2, a person/group who can work with me on figuring out an alternative propulsion system and powered wheels, once I've got the step 1 working model.

Can you help? Drop us your email and will cc info.

Were you aware just how cumbersome it is to fill up your gastank, when you drive in need of a wheelchair ? Or that you wouldn't be able to use the back hatch cause you can't reach from the wheelchair?
And of course it's a Tesla 😩 🤮 , but the video is 5 years old ❓ and the couple have since changed their preferences.
I named two points but there are more, look out for them. Often enough they're small but very important if you depend on a wheelchair.

We knew that getting in and out of a vehicle would be pretty much the same no matter what car we bought. BUT by getting an electric 'self driving' capable vehicle, we could avoid gas stations, and let Cambry's hands take a break while using the Tesla Autopilot. Not to mention the Smart Summon ablities. No more blocked parking lot spaces! The future of electric cars is looking pretty bright. Yeah, a Tesla is very expensive at the moment, just like all technology, its interesting to know that the technology exists, and will get cheaper and more common with time."

@PeterCxy @lispi314 personally, I think such #AntiConsumer & #AntiRepairDesign should be outlawed, espechally with #medical #devices like a #wheelchair.

  • There's no "legitimate reason" why they could not stick with an #XLR-style connector. It's just a big ass DC cable that needs to be protected against user error and electric shock but it's not like some industrial machine that has to be safe in an explosive atmosphere where it gets constantly splashed with acid and contaminants...

At this point I'm convinced manufacturers only do that because they know most wheelchair users are not capable of #DIY'ing something better or afford to hire someone to do it for them!

Comfy.SocialTᴀᴋᴀɴᴀsʜɪ Hᴏʀᴏ (@PeterCxy)ffs I now think most North American wheelchair vendors are just a bunch of money grabs. This replacement one I got from Air Canada (after they broke mine) is made, low and behold, in the same literal city in China as my old ones, yet the price is about 5x and the controller is shit. Like literally it takes 500ms or more for the wheelchair to do anything after I move the joystick. And guess what, it has an absolutely proprietary charging port and they sell their chargers for a completely ridiculous price. My old wheelchair uses the XLR port (yes, the audio one, weird, but it's kind of a standard in wheelchairs and scooters), so I was able to just make my own XT60 - XLR converter and charge it from PD using a smart battery charger from ISDT. Now? If I want to do the same shit, I will have to destroy my official charger, or I'll need to shell out over $60 to buy a backup one.

And the thing is, our cultural understanding of #disability is ridiculously narrow: I need the grab bars in a public toilet yet have had people express anger towards me for using a space that has a #wheelchair sign on it.

To me, the sign is a *symbol* for 'disability', not a prescriptive limitation for one specific type of disability.
