Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park is a short drive from our home in #Memphis, #Tennessee. It has been a welcoming forest for camping and hiking, and we have witnessed countless moonrises from the shores of Poplar Tree Lake in the park. This second-person ode contemplates these experiences and the wisdom gained from knowing this special place in western Tennessee.

Discovered that there were turtles in the lake at my neighbourhood park!
There were also fish the length of my arm swimming nearby. For some reason I thought that was wild. I mean a lake has to have wildlife after all lol
I've had quite a week, so I am enjoying the morning in my lovely neighbourhood park. Over the years, this neglected green spot in my town had endured developers trying to destroy it for luxury condos, decay during the lockdowns to now being a community hub at last for the townspeople. This is a private park not council owned, and I guess the co realised that instead of earning the ire of the people, they'd build the place into a community centre where they can not only earn good CSR points and goodwill, but also earned some cash.
Lots of cafes here, and an event space that can be rented.

Parramatta Park is a large 85 hectare (210 acre) urban park immediately west of the Parramatta CBD (circled in the map below).
To put that into perspective, it's around a quarter the size of Central Park in New York (which is around 341 ha or 843 acres).
The centrepiece of the park is Old Government House, which was home to 10 early Australian colonial governors from 1799–1847.
Following this, it was gazetted as a public park in 1858.
The park features the remains of an old observatory, significant sites for the local Darug Aboriginal community, and an old bath house.
With apartments and office towers rapidly sprouting up around Parramatta (https://pixelfed.social/p/ajsadauskas/791644000604289883), the park provides vital green space for the local community.
Today it features the 30,000 seat CommBank Stadium, a large public swimming pool, a rose garden, a wisteria garden, a large playground, open green space, an amphitheatre, and the Parramatta River.
