Picknicking at our local pond. There’s a few new native birds visiting now, & a moment ago, 2 good sized turtles were sunning themselves on a log. I was too slow to get a pic.

Yesterday I discovered a chipmunk that had tangled itself terribly in the #pond net. I put on my #wildlife gloves and proceeded to untangle the little bugger. It remained very calm the whole time I worked. As I held him up to show my wife, it chomped down, hard, on my thumb. Thankfully the gloves prevented any damage but I was startled at how strong of a bite they have. Anyway, the ungrateful little bastard is free!

I just spent the past 3.5 hours walking around in the woods at night with a few students for an amphibian night lab. Full moon, wood frogs and barred owls calling through the night, spotted salamanders swimming around. (they requested a weekend option, and it was only supposed to be 2 hours but they wanted to keep exploring more). the night and their excitement of seeing wildlife lifts my mood.

Today has been very productive.
After draining the #pond, and clearing some space around it, I dug out and remade it.
It is now more than twice the original size, and deeper.
I have not been able to completely fill it, as I'm using #rainwater collected in water butts, and I've emptied them, but rain is due in the next day or two.
I'll finish what I can tomorrow, including trimming the liner, and getting the pump going.

Building a #wildlife #pond out of half a barrel surrounded by circular gabion using recycled slate. Testing barrel for waterproofness and within a day, there's a pond skater!

A community gardening group is hoping to have many ponds in the area, to foster wildlife. At the pond class we were shocked to hear that *all water plants* (we're using native species) are imported - no one produces lovely water plants like Iris - native yellow flag iris, Feileastram; Nymphaea alba, native white water lily, bacán bán; Filipendula ulmaria, the scented meadowsweet, Airgead luachra, Persicaria amphibia, amphibious bistort, Glúineach uisce…
