Anybody experiencing hangs of the user interface in GNOME 48 RC2 on Debian trixie testing/unstable sid unstable?
Most of the time some Ctrl-Alt-F1 Ctr-Alt-F2 switching fixes it, but I just had a complete unrecoverable hang (at least not without ssh-ing into the machine), even though Shift Lock was still working, so it does not appear like the kernel had crashed. AMD Ryzen integraded Radeon GPU, Mesa 24.3.4, Linux kernel 6.13.

for #SID we at #EUKidsOnline are launching the report on David Smahel and his colleagues study on the impact of tech on teens' #wellbeing. The findings challenge the notion of a uniform effect of technology on adolescents: #socialmedia can be both beneficial and harmful depending on the context of its use. Adolescents also differ in their capacity to manage online experiences. eprints.lse.ac.uk/127158/

Switched out the Nano Swinsid in my fancy C64 here with a much better replacement SID, the SidKick Pico. This one has got the raspberry pi pico-chip onboard, so it looks a bit nicer than the stack of PCBs you get with the other variety of this solution. You can choose if it emulates the 6581 or the 8580, and it runs two of them at the same time, thus giving the option for stereo. In practice it switches seamlessly between stereo and mono, and sounds appropriately gnarly, like a SID should! You can even store programs on it. #commodore #c64 #retrocomputing #sid #raspberrypi

I could activate the FM. The trick is to prioritize the third oscillator in each #SID. As expected, one can get some quite weird sounds from it. Here is a little example, playing with an arpeggiator and a little reverb.

I implemented a fairly complete #GeneralMIDI table. It was quite a work! I am struggling though with the percussion sounds. This is an example of the drumkit while playing the bass drum (B0), the Closed Hi-Hat (F#1), and the Acoustic Snare (D1). Not impressive! I think I can get something better from the #SID.

It turns out that using the MIDI2SwinSID in MIDI MULTI mode (i.e. generating a different sound for each MIDI channel) is quite difficult, given the limitations of having just 6 voices with many filter and FM settings that have to be common for each SID. So I wrote a voice distribution algorithm and to debug it the synt shows the attribution table by pressing the button on the STM32 card. #electronics #diy #stm32 #sid #midi #retrocomputing #music #commodore64

The user interface of the MIDI2SwinSIDs project is becoming more interesting. I still have to adjust details in the acceleration of the encoder response, but it is definitely usable and nice. I added a small graphical representation of the waveform and the two ADSR’s. There’s still a lot of work to do, but it is becoming quite a nice little synth! #electronics #diy #stm32 #sid #midi #retrocomputing #music #synth

I started working again on the MIDI2SwinSIDs project after about two years. It kind of works in the sense that it generates sounds responding to MIDI events. However, it lacks a real user interface and some bells and whistles. I’d like to add an arpeggiator and experiment with the ring modulation, for instance. Mastering STM32 programming is difficult if you do not spend your life in it, though… #electronics #diy #stm32 #sid #midi #retrocomputing #music #synth
