One of the most innocuous features enabled on millions of iPhones is also one of the most dangerous for those seeking to protect their privacy in public. Apple's AirDrop protocol uses trivially bypassed security measures that authorities like the Chinese government have openly bragged about cracking to identify users since at least 2022.

You should assume that any device with AirDrop enabled is constantly broadcasting your name, email address, and phone number to everyone around you, even if you have it set to "Contacts Only." Apple has known about this flaw since 2019 and has not issued any fix.

Übrigens: Mit Snapdrop gibt es sowas wie eine unabhängige Web-basierte Alternative für AirDrop.

Das funktioniert dann natürlich auch mit dem Android Telefon, mit dem Linux Laptop und jedem anderen halbwegs aktuellen Gerät mit Webbrowser.

Die Dateien werden Peer-to-peer im lokalen Netzwerk übertragen. Der Snapdrop-Server wird nur für das Signalling genutzt. Wer will, kann den Signalling-Server auch selbst hosten.

In terms of file sharing, #KDE's #KDEConnect is far better, faster, and more reliable than #Apple's #AirDrop for sure. The only downside is the need to be on the same network, which makes it pretty useless other than when you're at home.

The upside is though, that it works with any devices regardless if they're on #iOS, #macOS, #Linux, #Windows, or #Android. I just wish clipboard sharing is as good and seamless as what you'd get on Apple devices though - but that probably has to do with the limitations on those platforms besides Linux.

Additional context: Tried to initiate an #iPhone to iPhone AirDrop - failed ~3-4 attempts, each attempt taking ~5 mins each at least.

Installed KDE Connect on the other iPhone (mine was already installed), paired the 2 phones, and sent 65 media files including a video - this whole process took ~3 mins.

I then transferred the same files to my Linux PC from my iPhone, that took I kid you not - less than 5 seconds.
