Sea ice extent in the Bering Sea is now just above the 1991-2020 median for the date in NSIDC data and just below the seasonal maximum extent that occurred the last week of March. Increasing areas of low concentration ice/open water well north of the pack ice edge are normal for this time of year. @Climatologist49 @ZLabe
Sea surface temperatures difference from the 1991-2020 average for the oceans around around Alaska. Generally near to above normal except in sea ice-influenced areas in the eastern Bering Sea. Data courtesy NOAA. @Climatologist49 @ZLabe

Enjoy your weekend! Here's your Friday ice update - #Arctic sea ice extent is currently the 7th lowest on record (JAXA data)...
• about 210,000 km² below the 2010s mean
• about 480,000 km² below the 2000s mean
• about 950,000 km² below the 1990s mean

Most of the sea ice in the #Arctic Ocean was around 0.5-2 meters thinner than the 1981-2010 average in March 2025. The largest anomalies were north of Greenland and the Lincoln Sea.

I've added a new visualization of #Antarctic sea ice thickness averaged by year, which parallels my version for the #Arctic by design. However, unlike the Arctic, there aren't any obvious long-term trends (annual mean).
Graphic will be updated yearly at https://zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-ice-figures/. GIOMAS data.

A new study has shed light on the highly variable and climate-sensitive routes that substances from Siberian rivers use to travel across the Arctic Ocean. The findings raise fresh concerns about the increasing spread of pollutants and the potential consequences for fragile polar ecosystems as climate change accelerates
