Central #Maine smashes third temperature record in a week

Augusta's high temperature Wednesday tied the warmest temperature ever recorded at the site in the month of November

by Ethan Horton, November 6, 2024

AUGUSTA — "Central Maine set yet another heat-related record Wednesday, marking the third time in the past week a daily temperature record has been broken.

"Wednesday’s unofficial high temperature reached 76 F (24.4 C) in #AugustaMaine and 73 degrees (22.7 C) in #WatervilleMaine, breaking the local record of 72 degrees (22.2 C), set in 2022. The area also broke records on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, easily surpassing high temperature records set in 1956 and 2003, respectively.

"The #PortlandMaine area broke a record for the entire month Wednesday: The high of 79 degrees F (26.1 C) shattered the warmest temperature ever recorded at the site in the month of November, set at 75 degrees F (23.8 C) on Nov. 5, 2022. Augusta’s high temperature Wednesday tied the area’s all-time November record."

#LongIsland breaks a temperature record for the date at 81 degrees; #NewYorkState issues wildfire alert

October 22, 2024

"Long Island set a new temperature record Tuesday for the date, topping off at 81 degrees at #Islip, in the second day of record-setting warmth in the region.

"The unseasonable heat breaks the 1979 record of 77 degrees for Oct. 22 and comes on top of Monday's high of 77, breaking the mark of 76 degrees recorded for that date in 2017.

"The warmth has only added to the region's unusually dry conditions, prompting New York State to issue an alert for a high risk of wildfires starting and spreading rapidly.

"This continues a roller-coaster trend for Nassau and Suffolk, which two months ago saw record rains that caused flash flooding in some areas, followed by record-low precipitation since then. October has had not only a record-high temperature but two overnight lows in the 30s.

"So far, October is shaping up to be the driest one on record at Islip, with just 0.10 inches of precipitation recorded so far. The record low precipitation for the month is 0.18 inches in 2000."

#TheBigDry: #forests and #shrublands are dying in parched #WesternAustralia

15/04/2024

"#Perth has just had its driest six months on record, while Western Australia sweltered through its #HottestSummer on record. Those records are remarkable in their own right. But these records are having real consequences.

"Unlike us, trees and shrubs can’t escape the heat and aridity. While we turn up the air conditioning, they bear the full brunt of the changing climate. Our previous research has shown plants are more vulnerable to #heatwaves than we had thought.

"Beginning in February 2024, large areas of vegetation started to turn brown and die off. With no real relief in sight, we unfortunately expect this mass plant death event to intensify and expand.

"Just like a coral bleaching event, WA’s plants are responding to the cumulative stress of the unusually long, hot and dry summer. And just like bleaching, global heating is likely to cause more regular mass plant deaths. The last time this happened in 2010-11, almost 20% of trees and shrubs in affected areas died.

"This is in line with #ClimateChange models, which pinpoint south-western Australia as a warming and drying hotspot."

"Climate breakdown has begun" as Phoenix breaks another heat record

Story by Andrei Ionescu, September 11, 2023

"According to the National Weather Service (NWS), on Saturday, September 9, the temperatures in Phoenix, Arizona set a new heat record, continuing to rise as the city broke its previous record of the most days at or above 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 Celsius).

New record

"This was the 54th day this year that the temperatures in Phoenix surpassed 110F – one day more that the record of 53 days set in 2020. Moreover, the daily average temperature of 97F (36.1C) in June, July, and August surpassed the previous record of 96.7 (35.9) set three years ago.

"As the weekend highs were expected to range between 108F and 114F (with night temperatures between 80F and 88F), NWS issued an excessive heat warning until 8pm on Sunday.

Anthropogenic climate change

"The scientists blame anthropogenic climate change correlated to the advent of El Nino (a temporary warming of parts of the Pacific Ocean impacting weather all over the globe). However, since this natural phenomenon is expected to peak at the beginning of next year, 2024 will most likely break all the records set this year.

"'The dog days of summer are not just barking, they are biting,' warned United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. "Climate breakdown has begun.'"
