Motion Above the Leaves

When I captured this image, I recognized that I had photographed a female northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) in flight. Initially, I believed the shutter speed was fast enough to freeze the motion of her wings, but now I realize it wasn’t. I’ll need to revisit my camera settings since I sometimes unintentionally alter them without noticing. That said, I find myself appreciating the outcome—a fortunate accident that turned out beautifully.

Yesterday, I considered leaving the house but thought, "What for?" If I did step out, where would I even go? Walmart, I suppose—it’s the shopping hub in this neck of the woods. But what would I buy? I don’t need anything. Besides, it rained yesterday, so taking an extra nap seemed like the better choice. Now, all the excitement of yesterday has worn me out, and I’ve decided to stay home today. Life on the edge, right? If the rain holds off this morning, I might grab my camera and sit out back with Charlie. Does that count as going somewhere? These truly are thrilling times.

Sea Truker

A couple of years ago, I spotted this interesting-looking boat near Costa Maya, Mexico. The name, Sea Truker, caught my attention. Was it intended to be Sea Trucker, but the name was already taken? Or could it have been a simple spelling error? Perhaps “truker” holds a meaning we don’t know. I lean toward the idea that its significance remains a mystery to us.

Coffee this morning is extra bitter; I’ve no idea why—I make it the same way every morning. I take my coffee black nowadays. In a previous decade, I would add a little sweetener, and the decade before that, sugar. How the world turns. Wasn’t that a soap opera? Or maybe it was As the World Turns. I never really paid attention to the soaps, even back in the day. Except for Dark Shadows—that one was different. It had vampires and witches, with all the drama and situations of real life. It ran during all of my high school years, so truthfully, I didn’t watch that often, but for a while one summer, I got caught up in the show. A long time ago.

Graceful Wader on Muddy Shore

I often struggle to distinguish between the greater yellowlegs (Tringa melanoleuca), as seen here, and the lesser yellowlegs. Without assistance, that is—I rely heavily on apps for tricky bird identifications, and even then, I don’t always get it right. I spotted this particular bird at a secluded pond in Albany, Georgia.

Graceful Willet in the Flats

The willet (Tringa semipalmata) effortlessly camouflages with the low tide mudflats at Gulfport, Mississippi, making it nearly imperceptible were it not for the tidal pool. Interestingly, its reflection in the still water offers a clearer, albeit slightly distorted, view of the bird.

I don't always take great photographs, but when I do, you can find them at:

Clash of the Plumage

While Charlie and I sat out back this morning, I watched these two rock pigeons (Columba livia) duke it out around the corner of a bird feeder. The bird on the right, with its left side toward the camera, eventually yielded the bird feeder and hopped to the ground.

I've read that pigeons are sexually dimorphic, but I have trouble telling the sexes apart. Nevertheless, I believe these two are males.

For some reason, Freddie and the Dreamers, a British band, popped into my head this morning. They had one number one hit in the USA in 1965: I'm Telling You Now, written by Mitch Murray and Freddie Garrity. Here's a snippet of the song's lyrics:

'I'm telling you now I'm telling you right away I'll be saying for many a day I'm in love with you now...'

The band also popularized their own quirky dance, The Freddy, which was a lively and playful take on uncoordinated jumping jacks. They also released a song called Do the Freddy that seemed great at the time, but after listening to it again, well... tastes evolve.

"The British invasion certainly made a lot of noise in the record industry." – Jeff Barry

Six Glimmers of Gold

I'm uncertain about how I feel about this image—it carries a somewhat abstract quality. The birds are goldfinches I spotted in a hazy treetop, and I was determined to make use of the picture. The interplay of gold and blue, one of my favorite contrasting color schemes, gives it a striking charm.

Lady Among the Branches

"I’ve heard from at least a couple of people who mentioned that female northern cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis) are their favorite. This one caught my eye during a walk in the woods. There's a curious blue spot near her tail that has me puzzled—perhaps it’s a small flower or an autumn leaf.

Good morning. 🍄🍄🍄

21 April 2025

This morning, I had to step out for a couple of hours. During that time, I came up with two different ideas to write about, but by the time I got home, both had slipped my mind. I should have written them down, but I was confident I would remember. Naturally, I passed through several doorways—those tricky barriers to memory. At home, I often find myself walking from one end of the house to the other to retrieve something, only to forget what I was after or end up grabbing something completely unrelated. It can take two or three trips to finally get it right. I've mentioned the doorway effect before, and it never ceases to amaze me.

"When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us." — Alexander Graham Bell

Linear Serenity

I examined the image of an eastern bluebird (Sialia sialis) and was struck by a certain quality I couldn't quite define. It seems connected to the way the arcing power cable gradually comes into focus, leading to the delicate reveal of the bluebird perched upon it. I should mention that when we're out walking, I always find myself scanning the lines for bluebirds.

Happy Easter!

Every now and then, I think about an Easter egg hunt from when I lived with my grandparents on a small ranch. My brother and I would search for eggs in the fenced-in area around the old farmhouse. That particular year, the hunt was a little more eventful than expected—we stumbled upon an egg that had been hidden the year before, still adorned with its vibrant, hand-painted colors. Unfortunately, when we cracked it open, it revealed quite the surprise... oops. Despite that mishap, Easter egg hunts always felt magical to me as a child. For some inexplicable reason, we genuinely believed in the Easter Bunny, even though we helped dye the eggs ourselves. I suppose that’s the beauty of wanting to believe in something.

Periwinkle Perfection

This photograph features a vibrant cluster of pink Madagascar periwinkles (Catharanthus roseus) against a shadowy backdrop. The composition highlights a single flower in the foreground, with the remaining blooms elegantly layered behind. Each flower showcases five delicate petals with a darker pink center, drawing attention to the small, visible receptacle at the heart of the bloom.

Flowers and Foliage make up one of the largest collections in my photo gallery. I’d love for you to take a moment to explore it!

Primeval

An ominous sky heavy with storm clouds looms, as birds drift in the distance above a solitary treetop reaching toward the heavens.

I don’t upload all the photos I share here to my Pixels gallery. I only post my personal favorites, while some don’t make the cut. I usually give myself a couple of days to decide how I feel about them before uploading.

Good morning. 🌻🌻🌻

19 April 2025

I loved fishing as a kid, and that passion carried into adulthood, though not as much as before. When I was nearing retirement, I considered buying a boat, but after some thought, I realized it would likely be a mistake. I learned that lesson from owning a 10-year-old Harley-Davidson motorcycle that now just takes up space in my garage. In a decade, I only put 10,000 miles on it—averaging 1,000 miles per year, but most of those were likely racked up in the first year. Instead of a boat, I decided to invest in a camera—or rather, cameras. If I had a pond in my backyard, I'd probably fish there, but since I don't, I grab my camera and head outside. Stop me if you've heard this before. 😉

Walking on Liquid Mirrors

The tidal pools on the beach in Gulfport, Mississippi last year provided a stunning backdrop for observing birds and capturing their reflections. The tranquil pools also created captivating ripples in the water, adding to the scene's visual charm. Among these natural wonders stood the snowy egret (Egretta thula), an elegant white bird whose graceful presence enhanced the beauty of the moment.
