We have tried to cut back on flying. This was our last trip to see the in laws before they permanently move closer to us next year and I really hope we can stick to our every other year plans for getting on a plane barring family emergencies.

WestJet wanted to know if I would recommend them for travel and this is my response.

WestJet customer service asking if I would recommend them. Rated a 0 with reasoning as: We really should not be flying and your infinite growth strategies are murdering people with heatwaves.
Customer surveying asking: Please tell us what, if anything, you felt was most challenging about preparing for this flight. By before this flight, we mean before arriving at the airport on the day of your flight. response: The guilt of flying while people are dying of heatwaves.

@CarbonBubble On BBCWS Weekend, this question was discussed briefly opening with a scientist pointing to the clear link. The rest fo the discussion degeneratee into the question of "would more turbulence and wearing a seatbelt put you off flying" to which the answer was a very firm "No". The disconnect was breathtaking.
For context, one of the commentators was in South Africa. London-Jo'burg return is 2 tonnes CO2e. Average per capita emissions for the UK 6 tCO2e…#flyingless

Increased patronage on Sydney-Melbourne train. The antiquated rail journey that takes 11 hours is seeing a resurgence, growing 47% in 2023, and is now higher than before the pandemic. But still just 5% of aviation market. Sydney - Melbourne aviation route is listed as the 2nd or 3rd busiest domestic route globally.

Often extra carriages are needing to be added to the twice daily service to meet demand. New trains have been ordered and will have internet and charging connectivity, but no sleeping berths.

Potential upgrading about 200km of track between Sydney-Melbourne could also slash travel times from 11 hours to 6 hours.
