Hey scientists!

How do you go about building and sustaining networks these days? In particular, I'm interested in how to build functional interdisciplinary working groups, across institutions.

Seems like the best place at the moment is LinkedIn, but it seems like it's just about ripe for enshittification (similarly with BlueSky).

Mastodon doesn't really have the tools (e.g. groups). Slack and other things are also walled gardens. Matrix might be cool, but I suspect it's going to be a struggle to get people on to it..

E-lists are a potential option, but they get messy above a certain point, and the moderation tools are weak. And also just .. ew.

Any other suggestions?

Social media is all shit and full of shitty people. There used to be areas where I used to feel comfortable and find interesting people. Today everything makes me nauseous and the only thing that still saves the internet and social networks is humor and cats. Because the rest is just badly cooked shit.
Three decades ago I used to be fascinated by meeting hackers, scientists and musicians. Today the internet is full of scammers and charlatans and those who really know have left social media or they never had them.
I have my friends in science and music, martial artists, doctors and writers. None of them have social media accounts or they have them secretly. To meet them you have to turn off your phones and sit at a bar table to chat.
My health problems are getting worse and I know I'm wasting what's left of my life by going on social media and filling my mind with rotten information.
None of that is necessary. And while Mastodon still feels at times like a kind of last refuge, at other times it seems to turn out to be as rotten as everything else.

#Scientists discover hidden 'plumbing' that's driving #Antarctic #icesheet into the #ocean
Maps created by combining different models of #glaciers and ice sheets reveal the way water is flowing deep beneath #Antarctica's ice. Understanding how these vary is important for accurately predicting how much ice will flow into the ocean, and how quickly it will move. Current models predict that ice melt from Antarctica could result in #sealevelrise up to 12in (30cm) by 2100.
