Ari [APz] Sovijärvi<p>This is it.</p><p>One year and 7 months later Road Show is once again in one piece and playable. The first test games did not reveal major issues, start mode scoop switch is flaky and the left plunger lane wasn't perfectly aligned. Other than that we played several fun test rounds with it!</p><p>I had missed this game so much!</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/pinball" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pinball</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/90spinball" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>90spinball</span></a></p>
Ari [APz] Sovijärvi<p>After assembling the game we're checking that it all works before attempting to play.</p><p>None of the eddy sensors that detect jaw hits (or the bulldozer hit) were working right, fortunately it was just a matter of adjusting the, for now. The eddy sensor boards are notoriously bad in these games and will be replaced at some point.</p><p>The mouth moving mechanisms were in rough shape back when we took the game apart. Red had both gears damaged, Ted had one. Both are now fixed with 3D printed parts and I'm really curious to see how various test materials I used here will last in real use.</p><p>The bulldozed blade needs new rubber pads and decals, but as the yellow square ones seem to be unique to this game, I had no spares at hand. I'll replace them the next time I need to order something. </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/pinrepair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pinrepair</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/pinball" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pinball</span></a></p>
Ari [APz] Sovijärvi<p>Road Show is in one piece! We still need to manually test everything before the first game, but damn, it's been a long project.</p><p>The characters will get their final eyes soon-ish, those still need to be painted.</p><p>But look at all the ramps and habitrails in this beast. I only now truly got to appreciate how complex those are in this game!</p><p>Oh the most important part: nothing immediately caught fire on the first boot!</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/pinball" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pinball</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/pinrepair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pinrepair</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/repair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>repair</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/arcade" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>arcade</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/90s" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>90s</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/90spinball" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>90spinball</span></a></p>
Ari [APz] Sovijärvi<p>The last part went in. Road Show is now in one piece! Ari [APz] Sovijärvi<p>The ramps are back in! Our heap of stuff to be installed is thinning out fast! Ari [APz] Sovijärvi<p>Road Show is starting to slowly remind a pin again. <a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/pinball" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pinball</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/pinrepair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pinrepair</span></a></p>
Ari [APz] Sovijärvi<p>Well, that was a productive day even when exactly zero parts went back into Road Show's playfield.</p><p>It's been in pieces so long I didn't remember that even when the playfield was washed and waxed, none of the parts were.</p><p>So my friend RIK came to help and we took everything under the playfield apart and gave it all a good scrub. Both Red and Ted are now assembled with the servo mod, although the still don't have the final version of the eyes and eyelids ready.</p><p>Ted had a crack in his face plate and that got dealt with. Ditto with plenty of other minor repairs. The next time we'll most likely can continue with the playfield reassembly.</p><p>Oh and here's Ted, now happy with his face fixed. </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/pinball" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pinball</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/pinrepair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pinrepair</span></a></p>

Ari [APz] Sovijärvi<p>Progress update on Road Show. I now have the code in place to sample the input coming from the pin to determine if it's supposed to be high or low, and to deal with the random interference. </p><p>The current version has 30ms worth of samples, from which it figures out if we're seeing PWM or not. This appears to be enough and now this thing mostly behaves as expected. I may have to come back to this and revise the implementation, but at least I can now continue to the other parts of this thing.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/pinball" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pinball</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/mods" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mods</span></a></p>
Ari [APz] Sovijärvi<p>I don't know why, but there's certain beauty to the 80s electronics. This here is a Williams WPC platform pinball backbox board set (this sub-model, WPC Security, is from around '94, but the set was originally designed in late 80s and used until mid-90s when they got a face-lift combining several boards).</p><p>In this picture lower left corner is the CPU board that houses a 6809, its RAM, ROM, NVRAM batteries and its namesake WPC ASIC chip that replaces a bunch of PIAs older platforms used. </p><p>Right above it is the Fliptronic board that controls the flipper coils and deals with optical flipper buttons.</p><p>In the top middle is the DCS sound card, that plays all-sampled sound tracks and all the sampled speech and effects.</p><p>Going right the next big board is the DMD controller, which in this platform does not have its own CPU, but is instead spoon fed by the main CPU.</p><p>The biggest board on lower right corner is the driver board that drives all the coils and lights.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/pinball" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pinball</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/arcade" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>arcade</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/electronics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>electronics</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/retro" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retro</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a></p>
Ari [APz] Sovijärvi<p>Road Show has been in pieces since fall 2023. As the second servo driven head finishes, I'll finally be able to put it back together. I was going through all the parts to see it's all still there.</p><p>Its ramps are pretty cool. There are some colored ones out there, but these fluorescent yellow ones just really stand out. I repaired the right side bridge out sign back in the days (its 555 timer chip was damaged) and now I only need to clean the before putting them back. There's some heavy ball track wear on them, may have to give them some Novus 3.</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/pinrepair" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pinrepair</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.games/tags/pinball" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pinball</span></a></p>
