I have no idea what type of building - office, substation, bunker, warehouse, luxury apartments - is hidden behind this unusual façade. A strange honeycomb structure that looks mysterious, forbidding and perhaps a little cruel. You can see in detail that there are slits on the lower edge of some of the honeycombs, in between there are even windows. What is supposed to penetrate through them? Uniquely designed cube-shaped houses in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Designed by architect Piet Blom, they are tilted at 45 degrees and set upon hexagon-shaped pylons, creating a visually striking architectural effect. The buildings have bright yellow and blue facades and are surrounded by people and plants in the foreground.

The most spectacular residential building in Lyon #Confluence is certainly the Tour Ycone, the filigree residential tower by Pritzker Prize winner Jean Nouvel. With its soft colors and blurred, almost indistinct silhouette, the Tour Ycone nestles into the post-industrial urban landscape between the #Rhône and #Saône rivers. The tower appears to be loosely assembled from fragile scaffolding and rectangular frames. It looks as if a light breeze could bring this upwardly divergent house of cards crashing down. But a perforated, loosely attached roof forces the airy shape of the tower into a solid form.

The B6 office building by Christian Kerez attracts particular attention in the Confluence district. The sober building is based on a simple grid formed by concrete columns that support the ceilings and floor slabs. A band of windows closes off the storeys to the outside without appearing like a boundary. This is because it is not the windows but the supporting concrete columns that close off the façade. They are the outer layer of the façade and thus create a permeable connection between the interior and urban space. The load-bearing structure becomes the architecture.

The construction, which is heavy at ground level and becomes lighter as it rises towards the sky, interprets the classic order of columns in a sophisticated way. From the rustic Doric column to the Ionic and the slender Corinthian column. An ironic gesture! Because unlike the classical columns of the 18th and 19th centuries, which adorn the magnificent buildings all over Lyon, the concrete columns of the B6 are not façade decorations at all, but supporting elements of the architecture. It is astonishing how much care has been taken in the execution of the columns. The columns of the lower three storeys are prefabricated from tamped concrete. The last picture in the mini-series about Sabaudia shows Piazza Santa Barbara. Originally there was a covered market here where the town's inhabitants could buy food. Then the idea arose to build a congress center in place of the market. The market was demolished. The center was never built.
