This Week in Self-Hosted (11 April 2025)
Hoarder's new name change, software updates and launches, a spotlight on #Streamystats -- a Jellyfin statistics-tracking platform, and more in this week's #selfhosted recap!
Hey folks, my cranky old #Synology #NAS is getting full and I'm thinking about upgrades. I don't think I want to buy another commercial NAS and I have an AM5 motherboard doing literally nothing. Sny opinions on #unraid vs #truenas ? (I mostly use for #plex streaming and local backups) but may consider moving my #HomeAssistant install to the box too in the future). #homelab
Last night, I switched my #RaspberryPi #Plex server from snap to apt updating, to see if that made any difference with the visibility of the photo libraries on the Plex Photos app for iOS, and... Nope!
Still can't see any images from my #Linux-based servers.
Any suggestions, or do I move photos to another app?
If you use #Plex and you're also hoarding media now because you're paranoid about the internet just sort of... disappearing... one day, you might want to take a look at this handy guide that shows how to run Plex with only a local network
https://www.howtogeek.com/303282/how-to-use-plex-media-server-without-internet-access/
another #plex annoyance, this time server-side: i had voice activity detection set to run as a scheduled task but it seemingly just never would and never has. set it to run on media add as well and that should solve the problem for new media. but for old media that hasn't had it run, apparently when you bulk select and do "analyze” it ALSO doesn't do VAD for some reason. only if you go into the item and do analyze.
so of course instead i figured out how to do it via the plex API and now just have to make an analyze call for every single movie and TV episode to force VAD
uhhh #plex ios update broke spacebar to play/pause on ipad??
Enhance your budget smart tv experience:
1. never let it connect to the internet
2. by a lenovo m900 mini computer at least 6th gen intel
3. Install any linux operating system or media os that is free and open source
4. Feel free to pirate any media from companies that are known to change the terms of the sale after the sale
5. Remember folks: if buying isn't owning, piracy isn't stealing
Did you know? One of the best ways to support your favorite artists is still by purchasing their albums. Even if they received 100% of the royalties from streaming, it would take at least 10,000 streams for an artist to earn the same amount as from a single album sale.
When was the last time you listened to anything 10,000 times?
uhhh the #plex ios update breaks the ability to zoom pillarboxed 4:3 content on 4:3 devices like uhhh ipads

#AprilShowers bring new projects, software updates and launches, a spotlight on #BookLore -- an ebook management and reading platform, and more in this week's #selfhosted recap!
#mastoaiuto sto provando #jellyfin da un po ma lo trovo molto lento e pecca in molti aspetti, mi consigliate un altro media server con le medesime funzioni possibilmente #opensource #plex non dovrebbe essere male ma non è open...
Public service announcement: if you use the #plex app, do NOT update to the new version. It’s so buggy that it is unusable. Literally. You are warned. And there’s no support or bug reporting mechanism in it, either.
@infuse the best video player I’ve seen - better than I imagined even and I’m really spoiled - for all Apple devices
Oh lol, it's one of those things where people say "so and so" is amazing!!! Works perfectly for me so it must for you... then you realise immediately after giving it a whirl that something as basic as subtitle support on your media, regardless if transcoding or direct play (why that'd even matter, honestly?) is broken on #Jellyfin.
I'm eager to switch to Jellyfin bcos I always knew it was the platform to be on, not #Plex (since #FOSS and all), but I am perplexed how Jellyfin is supposedly not able to deliver on this seemingly very basic feature for a video streaming platform - support playing subtitles (properly) with your videos https://forum.jellyfin.org/t-subtitles-out-of-sync
RE: https://sakurajima.social/notes/a633ncz6ta
Someone even compared it to the #Sonos app update.
… and my goodness, #Plex users in their support forums are upset with this change. Especially with the price increases for Plex Pass coming soon.
The company is coming across as arrogant “we know better than our users” at the moment. They’ll loose subscribers to #Jellyfin if they don’t turn this around.
Wow! The new #Plex app for mobile absolutely sucks!
They’ve removed photo and music browsing (spun off into other apps that don’t actually work). The new user interface is an appalling mess, which promotes a bunch of dreadful B-movies over your own carefully curated library. The app also crashes regularly.
How did it make it out of beta? Obviously no user testing or quality assurance checks.
If you can, turn off auto update in the App Store and stay on the old version.
My Plex server can beat up your Plex server.
