Report: "Harvard Sues Trump Administration Over Threats to Cut Funding"

The lawsuit signals a major escalation of the ongoing fight between higher education & President Trump, who has vowed to “reclaim” elite universities.

"The administration has cast its campaign as a fight against antisemitism, but has also targeted programs and teaching related to racial diversity and gender issues."

#Harvard University sued #Trump's administration on Monday in an effort to halt the govt's pause of >$2B in funding for the #US #educational institution.

"Over the course of the past week, the federal government has taken several actions following Harvard’s refusal to comply with its illegal demands," Harvard President Alan Garber said in a statement.

"Moments ago, we filed a lawsuit to halt the funding freeze because it is unlawful & beyond the government's authority," Garber said.

(please boost for reach) Does anyone have any insight into whether/how the #AmericanPhysicalSociety is going to react to the ongoing extreme pressure that is being put on #Harvard and other universities?

After all, the pressure also involves dramatic threats to cut fundamental research funding across the board unless certain demands are met to censor academics? It would seem this is exactly the kind of issue that has direct impact on physics research that the APS should take a public stand on. It would also seem that statements by the #APS and other research societies could provide critically needed support and thereby have a real impact at this point in time, maybe the last good opportunity to do so.

Quoting Odeh Bisharat on how Trump's actions, framed as combating antisemitism, a tactic to stifle dissent and suppress the liberal academic establishment, is fueling antisemitism:

[…] This was all the Jews needed. It's not enough that they will be remembered as having killed more than 50,000 Gazans and destroyed 70% of the Gaza Strip; now history will remember that because of them, higher education institutions in the United States are being destroyed and collapsing, in the name of fighting antisemitism and the demand to politically balance educational content and cancel gender and ethnic diversity programs. Harvard University, one of the most important in the world, is fighting for its existence following sanctions imposed by the administration. 'This is 10 or 100 times more than what McCarthy tried to do,' said Larry Summers, former president of Harvard.

"After freezing all grants to #Columbia University last week, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is now stopping grant and contract payments to Harvard University and four other universities [#Brown, #Northwestern, #Cornell, #WeillCornell Medical School]…The move will both block new funding and halt payments to investigators currently working on NIH projects…The Department of Health and Human Services (#HHS)…instructed NIH staff not to provide any communication to these institutions or to Columbia about whether the funds are frozen or why, according to the email."
