Text from article: In Phoenix, the federal courthouse is named after Justice Sandra Day O’Connor: it’s the Sandra Day O’Connor U.S. Courthouse. The General Services Administration (GSA) is the agency charged with running the building. The GSA is currently controlled by DOGE and they’re the ones currently breaking leases on federal offices around the country and trying to sell off, at least as of earlier this week, hundreds of federal buildings including the Departments of Justice, Labor and Health and Human Services. The Phoenix courthouse houses the judicial branch mostly. But the GSA is still in charge of running the building. So court staff were surprised earlier this week when they found out that all the GSA employees who run the building had been fired. None of the judicial offices, I’m told, had been notified. They only realized what was happening when they noticed some members of the building staff crying. Seems like a problem, right? Who’s running the building? How’s it going?

The culling of #GSA’s #18F in particular, a specialized #digital services agency tasked w/improving #user experience w/govt services & helping #FederalAgencies build & buy a variety of #tech, has crippled programs that silently but effectively prepared Americans for #weather #disasters or streamlined tasks, like renewing a #passport or filing #taxes. Over the wknd, ~90 technologists at 18F were fired via surprise email that went out shortly before 1AM ET on Sat morning.

Those buildings include FBI Headquarters in Washington, DC, the buildings which are the headquarters of the DOJ, HHS, DOL and more – more than 400 buildings across the country. Here’s the listing and here’s a Politico piece which gives an overview. Late Update: A rather bizarre coda to this story. Or, perhaps not a coda, just an update. Several hours after GSA posted this and after the first round of press they removed all the DC buildings from the list. Given how unexplained and arbitrary the decision-making seems to be it seems entirely possible they’ll be back on the list soon. But at least for now we’re not selling the Department of Justice, at least in the sense of the literal building. Even Later Update: And now the entire list is gone.

In a separate memo sent to staff on Monday, Johnson told employees the #GSA - a separate agency that handles leases across the federal govt - has decided to terminate the SEC's leases for its #LosAngeles & #Philadelphia offices.

In an email to workers at the agency’s #Technology Transformation Services, Thomas Shedd, a fmr #Tesla engineer who is now the division’s dir, said that #18F had been identified as noncritical & would be cut.

“This decision was made with explicit direction from the top levels of leadership within both the administration & #GSA,” Shedd said in the email…. He added that while no other #TTS programs had been affected, “we anticipate more change in the future.”
