@cdarwin @pluralistic Excellent analysis. I have read some of Project 2025. My only peccadillo with this is that it takes Project 2025 and Trump as acting in #GoodFaith and describes this as an earnest plan for the US. I believe; however, it is a #BadFaith intention to #SewChaos, #DestabilizeGovernment, and follow through on #GroverNorquist's Goal: "My goal is to cut government in half in twenty-five years, to get it down to the size where we can drown it in the bathtub." #DecapitationStrike

When it comes to #reporting on #NorthAmerica’s #OverdoseCrisis — the worst in our history — #misleading articles can increase #stigma against people who use #drugs, skew the public’s understanding of the issue, inspire #BadFaith policy and make it more difficult for other #journalists to gain the trust and respect of #MarginalizedCommunities.

Which brings me to a splashy, new piece of drug #journalism from U.K.-based newspaper the Telegraph, falsely claiming that #decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of drugs “made #Vancouver the #fentanyl capital of the world.”

The Telegraph’s story, like others before it, makes a number of other #misleading claims, including stating that #SafeSupply programs, which provide pharmaceutical alternatives to street drugs, are making the situation worse because that supply is being sold to street users, including young people. Some safe supply is being diverted, but there is no evidence that it’s led to more deaths or teens forming new addictions.

Reporting like this misses important context about the #DrugCrisis, allowing #politicians to drum up fear about #HarmReduction rather than confront how decades of #prohibition have impacted the current #FentanylCrisis. After the 2010s crackdown on prescription pain pills, many people dependent on #opioids turned to heroin instead. Eventually, #DrugTraffickers began cutting heroin with fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 50 times stronger, that is also cheaper and simpler to make and smuggle.

From #Yosemite to #BearsEars, Erasing #NativeAmericans From #USNationalParks

The foundational myth of America’s National Parks is one of heroic preservation of “pristine wilderness” — but places like Yosemite were already home to thriving communities that cherished the #environment around them.

by Hunter Oatman-Stanford

"Today, the foundational myth of America’s National Parks revolves around the heroic preservation of 'pristine wilderness,' places supposedly devoid of human inhabitants that were saved in an unaltered state for future generations. This is obviously a falsehood: Places like Yosemite were already home to thriving communities that had long cherished—and changed—the environment around them. #GeorgeCatlin’s paintings are vivid reminders that the vast expanses of our western frontier were not empty, but rather brimming with human cultures.

"'#NativeAmericans would later be put on display like animals in a zoo.'

"Though the National Park Service prevented wholesale #industrialization, they still packaged the wilderness for consumption, creating a scenic, pre-historical fantasy surrounded by roads and tourist accommodations, all designed to mask the violence inherent to these parks’ creation. More than a century later, the #UnitedStates has done little to acknowledge the government-led #genocide of #NativePopulations, as well as the continued hardships they face because of the many #BadFaith #treaties enacted by the U.S. government. This story is an elemental part of our National Park system, the great outdoor museum of the American landscape, but the myth continues to outweigh the truth. How did the National Park Service evict Yosemite’s indigenous communities and erase their history, and can it come to terms with this troubling legacy today?

[...]

"Despite the obvious claims of indigenous peoples to their lands, white officials frequently justified their removal by claiming that #NativeAmericans weren’t good stewards of the new American frontier. In its excellent exhibition, 'Nation to Nation: Treaties Between the United States and American Indian Nations,' the National Museum of the American Indian points out the myriad ways the United States government repeatedly lied about, altered, and disregarded legal contracts intended to secure native access to the land they already lived on. Beyond this egregious, criminal behavior on the part of U.S. officials, they also relied on written documentation, disadvantaging tribal officials who were accustomed to oral agreements or not fluent in English. Sometimes contracts were even negotiated by individuals that had no power to speak for their larger native community."

More people need better understanding. Yes, it'll make you sick & prob scare you. It should. #ChristianNationalism is as old as Christianity, but this film NAILS our current version--the truth of the culture that brought us to 2016 and beyond.

Bad Faith,
a new documentary on the rise of Christian nationalism in the United States,
opens with an obvious, ominous scene
– the storming of the Capitol on 6 January 2021
– though trained on details drowned out by the deluge of horror and easily recognizable images of chaos.

That Paula White, Donald Trump’s faith adviser, led the Save America rally in
a prayer to overturn the results for “a free and fair election”.

That mixed among Trump flags, American flags and militia symbols were numerous banners with Christian crosses;
on the steps of the Capitol, a “JESUS SAVES” sign blares mere feet from “Lock Them UP!”

The movement to overturn the 2020 election for Donald Trump was, as the documentary underscores,
inextricable from a certain strain of belief in America as a fundamentally Christian nation,
separation of church and state be damned.

In fact, as Bad Faith argues, Christian nationalism
– a political movement to shape the United States according a certain interpretation of evangelical Christianity, by vote or, more recently, by coercion
– was the “galvanizing force” behind the attempted hijacking of the democratic process three years ago.

Bad Faith traces the origins of the movement as a savvy, disproportionately powerful political force,
from churches to Republican political operatives to donors,
either from conviction or convenience.

“I think a lot of Americans have a very difficult time accepting and understanding the fact that such treason, such anti-democratic activity,
could be carried out by people who basically look like Sunday school teachers,” Stephen Ujlaki, the film’s director, told the Guardian.

By looking back on the half-century of Christian nationalist belief, organizing and action, the events of January 6 no longer seemed shocking,
but the logical endpoint of anti-democratic ideals.
“It was unmistakable, once you looked in the right place and you listened to what people were saying,
and you understood how to decode what they were saying,” said Ujlaki.

“Little would you know that when they talk about recreating the kingdom of God on earth, they weren’t talking about something spiritual.
They were talking about demolishing democracy so that God, ie themselves, could rule.
And for that reason, I call it a conspiracy carried out in broad daylight.”

Other #NBC & #MSNBC hosts & contributors will undoubtedly now be under pressure to speak their minds as well. MSNBC’s prime-time lineup today will be worth watching.
The on-air #protests may be a seminal moment in #PoliticalMedia as #news orgs continue to grapple w/how to responsibly represent voices from the #Trump #RightWing on their screens & in their pages w/o handing their #platforms over to #ElectionDeniers or #BadFaith actors who have attacked & attempted to discredit their own reporters.
